DEEP CUT is a documentary production company focused on producing high-end, archive-based films that tell stories about surprising characters and worlds.
Prior to launching the company, founders Joe Beshenkovsky and James Smith respectively edited and produced multiple award-winning films and television programs, among them The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling, Jane, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, and This American Life.
Recent work includes projects for Universal Pictures, HBO, ABC and Concordia, including the HBO documentary special The Last Cruise and A Modern Farewell for ABC.In 2022, they collaborated with filmmakers Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio on the two-part documentary George Carlin's American Dream, which won the Primetime Emmy Award for Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special and the ACE award for Best Edited Non-Theatrical Documentary. Their most recent film, Flipside, premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
