DEEP CUT is a documentary production company focused on producing high-end, archive-based films that tell stories about surprising characters and worlds.
Prior to launching the company, founders Joe Beshenkovsky and James Smith respectively edited and produced multiple award-winning films and television programs, among them The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling, Jane, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, and This American Life.
Recent work includes projects for Universal Pictures, HBO, ABC and Concordia, including the HBO documentary special The Last Cruise and A Modern Farewell for ABC. In 2022, they collaborated with filmmakers Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio on the two-part documentary George Carlin's American Dream, which won the Primetime Emmy Award for Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special and the ACE award for Best Edited Non-Theatrical Documentary. In 2023, they produced the documentary Flipside, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Their first film as directors, Mata Hari, premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in 2025, where it won the Venezia Classici Award for Best Documentary on Cinema.
